Frequently Asked Questions
What is Support at Home?
Support at Home is the Australian Government’s in-home aged care program. It helps eligible older Australians access services and support so they can remain living at home for longer.
When did Support at Home start?
Support at Home started on 1 November 2025. It replaced the Home Care Packages Program and Short-Term Restorative Care Programme.
Does Support at Home replace the Commonwealth Home Support Programme?
Not yet. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme continues separately for now and is expected to transition no earlier than 1 July 2027.
Who is eligible for Support at Home?
Eligibility is determined through an aged care assessment. Generally, people may qualify for an aged care assessment if they have care needs and are aged 65 or older, are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 50 or older, or are aged 50 or older and homeless or at risk of homelessness.
How do I access Support at Home?
The first step is to apply for an aged care assessment through My Aged Care. This can be done online, by phone or in person. The assessment will determine whether you are eligible and what services may be appropriate.
What services are available under Support at Home?
Support at Home services are grouped into Clinical Supports, Independence Services and Everyday Living Services. These may include allied health, nursing, personal care, transport, respite, cleaning, gardening, meals, assistive technology and home modifications, depending on the person’s assessed needs and support plan.
Can I access allied health services under Support at Home?
Yes, allied health services may be included where they are approved and aligned with the person’s assessed needs. This may include Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Speech Pathology, Psychology/Counselling and Dietitian support.
Can I get Physiotherapy through Support at Home?
Physiotherapy may be available under Support at Home where it is approved in the person’s support plan. Physiotherapy can help with mobility, falls prevention, strength, pain management, rehabilitation and maintaining independence at home.
Can I get Occupational Therapy through Support at Home?
Occupational Therapy may be available under Support at Home where it is approved in the person’s support plan. Occupational Therapy can help with home safety, daily living skills, equipment, home modifications and strategies to support independence.
Can Support at Home fund assistive technology or home modifications?
Support at Home includes a pathway for Assistive Technology and Home Modifications. Approved participants may be able to access funding for equipment, products or home changes that help them live safely and independently at home.
Will I need to pay for Support at Home services?
Some people may need to contribute to the cost of some services. Contribution amounts depend on the type of service and the person’s financial circumstances. Clinical Supports are fully funded by the government, while Independence Services and Everyday Living Services may involve contributions.
