NDIS Dietitian 2025 Guide: What You Can Claim, Appointment Types, and Questions to Ask a Provider

Written by Bloom Healthcare

If you’re navigating the NDIS, you might be wondering – can I claim dietitian services through my plan? And if so, what exactly is covered? From appointment types to provider requirements and travel charges, there’s a lot to unpack.

This guide will walk you through what to expect in 2025 when accessing a dietitian under the NDIS, how to make the most of your funding, and what to ask before choosing a provider.

At Bloom Healthcare, we support a diverse range of clients, including NDIS participants and private clients, with access to Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) who deliver real-world results – in homes, in the community, or via telehealth. Our primary aim is to provide personalized and practical nutritional support to help clients achieve their health, nutrition, and lifestyle goals, promoting greater independence. Our experienced dietitians are highly qualified, stay up to date with the latest nutrition science, and are committed to helping each client achieve goals tailored to their individual needs.

Can the NDIS Fund Dietitian Services?

Yes – most NDIS plans can include funding for dietitian services if your goals relate to:

  • Health and nutrition
  • Mealtime management
  • Independence with food and eating
  • Managing chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders)
  • Feeding support (e.g. texture-modified diets, tube feeding, or selective eating)
  • Support for managing specific health conditions through tailored nutrition plans

NDIS support includes access to nutrition services and nutritional support tailored to individual needs, helping participants manage health conditions and improve their overall wellbeing.

NDIS dietetics support is usually funded under Capacity Building, in one of two categories:

NDIS Category When It’s Used
Improved Health and Wellbeing For nutrition education, health-related eating support, behaviour-informed coaching, and weight management. These services are designed to help participants achieve their NDIS goals and improve health outcomes.
Improved Daily Living For skill development like cooking, shopping, and understanding food safety; also used for mealtime management and swallowing strategies in collaboration with other allied health professionals. These supports also contribute to achieving NDIS goals and better health outcomes.

Who Can Provide NDIS Dietetics?

Only Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) registered with Dietitians Australia can deliver claimable services under the NDIS.

At Bloom Healthcare, all our dietitians are NDIS-ready APDs, with experience supporting people with:

  • Autism and ADHD
  • Intellectual and psychosocial disability

We work closely with speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and PBS practitioners – ensuring a multidisciplinary, person-centred approach to support.

Managing Complex Needs with NDIS Dietitians

NDIS dietitians are essential partners for participants with complex needs, offering specialised nutrition support that goes beyond standard dietary advice. Experienced NDIS dietitians understand the challenges faced by individuals with multiple disabilities, sensory sensitivities, or unique dietary requirements. They work closely with participants, families, and support teams to develop tailored nutrition plans that address managing food allergies, food restrictions, and specific health concerns.

For self managed NDIS participants, accessing dietitian services means you can receive highly personalised nutrition support, including meal planning that fits your lifestyle, food preferences, and health goals. Whether you need help navigating food allergies, supporting fussy eaters, or managing texture-modified diets, NDIS dietitian services provide ongoing support to help you build healthy eating habits and improve your overall wellbeing.

With a focus on practical strategies and achievable goals, experienced NDIS dietitians empower participants to make informed food choices, enjoy mealtimes, and meet their nutritional needs. This holistic approach ensures that every participant receives the right support to thrive, no matter how complex their needs may be.

Managing Chronic Conditions through Dietetic Support

Living with a chronic condition such as diabetes or coeliac disease can present daily challenges, but NDIS dietitians are here to help. Accredited practising dietitians work alongside NDIS participants to create tailored nutrition plans that support the management of chronic conditions, taking into account individual food preferences, lifestyle, and health goals.

Plan managed NDIS participants can access dietitian services for comprehensive nutrition support, including detailed meal planning, report writing for plan reviews, and ongoing monitoring of health outcomes. These services are designed to help you manage your condition effectively, improve daily living, and achieve greater independence.

NDIS funding can be used to access a range of dietitian services, from in-person home visits to flexible telehealth consultations, ensuring support is available wherever you are. Dietitians work collaboratively with you and your support network to provide practical advice, education, and ongoing encouragement, helping you make sustainable changes for better health.

Whether you’re managing diabetes, coeliac disease, or another chronic condition, NDIS dietitian services offer the expertise and support you need to maintain a healthy diet, manage symptoms, and enhance your overall quality of life.
