NDIS Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) at Bloom Healthcare
At Bloom Healthcare, we provide Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) services under the NDIS framework. We focus on supporting infants and young children with developmental delays or disabilities through both Early Intervention and permanent disability pathways that the NDIS offers. Our evidence-based approach empowers families, enhances each child’s quality of life, and fosters their development through meaningful participation in daily routines and social environments. We collaborate with early childhood partners and other stakeholders to provide essential support and resources, ensuring families have access to necessary services and enhancing the effectiveness of our early childhood initiatives.
What is Early Childhood Intervention?
Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) refers to specialised support services tailored for children aged 0 to 9 years with developmental delays or disabilities. At Bloom Healthcare, our experienced professionals deliver targeted therapy to children, focusing on promoting their development, wellbeing, and community participation.
Our dedicated therapists work closely with families to create personalised interventions that address the child’s unique needs, ensuring they receive direct, hands-on therapy in areas such as communication, motor skills, emotional regulation, and more. In addition to working directly with the child, we partner with parents, caregivers, and other key stakeholders to enhance their knowledge and skills, enabling them to support their child’s progress in everyday routines.
Through this dual approach, we aim to maximise opportunities for learning, foster participation in family and community life, and help children thrive in all areas of their development.
We recognise that early support is crucial in shaping a child’s lifelong development and well-being, and we strive to strengthen family capacity so that children can thrive both now and in the future.
Why Early Intervention Matters
The first few years of life are critical for brain development and impact a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities. Early childhood intervention can significantly improve outcomes for children with disabilities or developmental delays, enabling them to develop essential skills and fully participate in family life, education, and their communities.
The evidence base for Early Intervention demonstrates that early intervention maximises a child’s potential by providing the necessary tools and support to navigate everyday environments, such as home, early learning centres, and public spaces. This benefits the child, strengthens family cohesion, and reduces long-term support needs as children transition into school and adulthood.
Benefits and Outcomes
The early childhood approach at Bloom Healthcare offers numerous benefits and positive outcomes for children and their families. By providing comprehensive support and resources, we aim to:
- Improve Health and Wellbeing: Our interventions are designed to enhance the overall health and wellbeing of children, ensuring they thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.
- Enhance Development and Learning: We focus on fostering each child’s development and learning, supporting them to acquire new and essential skills.
- Increase Confidence and Capacity of Parents and Carers: By empowering parents and caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need, we boost their confidence and capacity to support their child’s growth.
- Support Inclusion in Community Settings: We promote the inclusion of children in community and everyday settings, ensuring they can participate meaningfully alongside their peers.
- Improve Quality of Life: Our holistic approach enhances the overall quality of life for children and their families, creating a supportive and nurturing environment.
In the long term, the early childhood approach also leads to:
- Lifelong Outcomes: Early Intervention provides children with the support they need to build lifelong skills.
- Stronger Relationships: Early Intervention can support emotional regulation, social opportunities and connection.
- Increased Opportunities: A focus on inclusion through a neurodiversity affirming approach means every child is advocated for and is given opportunities to succeed in various aspects of life.
- Stronger Families and Communities: Our approach strengthens families and builds resilient communities, creating a network of support that benefits everyone involved.
Eligibility and Referral
To be eligible for the early childhood approach at Bloom Healthcare, children must be under the age of 9 and have a developmental delay or disability. Families can access our services through having an active NDIS plan, or through a referral from a doctor, medical practitioner, or other health professional.
The referral process typically involves:
- Assessment by a Medical Practitioner: A doctor or medical practitioner will assess the child’s needs and determine whether the early childhood approach is suitable.
- Referral to an Early Childhood Partner: If deemed appropriate, the doctor or medical practitioner will refer the family to an early childhood partner.
- Contact and Plan Development: The early childhood partner will then contact the family to discuss their needs and develop a tailored plan for support.
Families also have the option to contact an early childhood partner directly to inquire about the approach and determine its suitability for their child. This ensures that every family has access to the support they need to enhance their child’s health and development.
Our Early Childhood Intervention Approach
At Bloom Healthcare, we adhere to Best Practice Guidelines in Early Childhood Intervention. This ensures that our services are comprehensive, inclusive, and of the highest quality. Our approach to ECI is built around several fundamental principles:
- Family-Centred and Strengths-Based: Families are at the heart of everything we do. We recognise the crucial role that families play in their children’s development and ensure that therapy is based on the goals and priorities that are important to the family. By focusing on child and family strengths, we empower parents and caregivers to support their children’s development.
- Culturally Responsive: Our team values and respects the cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity of the families we support. We provide flexible and inclusive services that align with each family’s unique values, ensuring that all children and families feel welcomed, respected, and fully engaged.
- Inclusive and Participatory: We believe every child has the right to fully participate in family, community, and educational settings. Our services promote inclusive environments where children with developmental delays or disabilities can engage meaningfully alongside their peers.
- Collaborative Teamwork: At Bloom Healthcare, we believe in the power of collaborative teamwork. Our team of therapists will work collaboratively with your family, and other key stakeholders to ensure a consistent approach across environments. The Bloom therapy team will also work closely with each other to develop therapy goals and intervention strategies to achieve the best outcomes.
A key person from our team will be your primary point of contact, coordinating with other professionals to ensure a holistic, well-rounded service for your child. This integrated approach helps deliver well-rounded, consistent care aligned with each family’s goals and preferences. By fostering strong partnerships with families, we create a supportive network that enhances the child’s and family’s outcomes. Natural Environments: Our ECI services are designed to be delivered in the child’s natural environments—at home, in early learning centres, or within the community. We ensure that children can practice and develop skills in real-life situations by embedding interventions into everyday routines, such as mealtime, play, and social interactions. This approach maximises their opportunities for learning and enables progress by allowing children to learn and grow in familiar, meaningful settings, alongside other children.
- Capacity Building Approach: Our therapists will work closely with family and key people in the child’s life to build their confidence, knowledge and skills to support the child’s learning and development in their home and community.
- Neuroaffirming Practice: At Bloom Healthcare we celebrate neurodiversity and acknowledge children as individuals with unique strengths, interests, and ways of interacting with the world around them. We will work towards goals that are honouring of a child’s identity and needs and will identify strategies for the people and environment around the child to support their participation. Our interventions are tailored to affirm individual neurological differences, creating an environment that promotes acceptance, confidence, and positive development. This could include adaptations to the child’s environment and routines, sensory and emotional regulation strategies as well as communication strategies.
