What Is NDIS Paediatric Physiotherapy?
Paediatric Physiotherapy helps babies, children and teenagers develop and use physical skills for daily life. This can include rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, walking, running, climbing, jumping, balance, coordination, strength, posture and mobility.
Unlike adult Physiotherapy, Paediatric Physiotherapy is closely linked to childhood development. Sessions are adapted to the child’s age and developmental stage and may use games, movement and play to make therapy engaging and meaningful.
Physiotherapy for Children Aged 0 to 9
For younger children, physiotherapy may focus on gross motor development, positioning, rolling, sitting, crawling, walking, balance and mobility. Physiotherapists may also support needs such as torticollis, plagiocephaly, toe walking and mobility equipment where clinically appropriate.

Physiotherapy for Children and Young People Aged 10 to 18
As children grow, physiotherapy may focus on strength, endurance, posture, coordination, mobility, participation in physical activity and moving around school and the community more independently.

How Paediatric Physiotherapy with Bloom Works

We Listen
Your Physiotherapist gets to know your child, watches how they move and learns what is important to your family. Assessment may include gross motor skills, balance, strength, coordination, posture and gait.

We Build a Plan
Together, we identify practical physical goals linked to your child’s needs and NDIS goals, then agree on an approach that fits everyday routines.

We Support Progress
Therapy is delivered in a way that suits your child. Progress is reviewed over time, and parents and carers may receive practical strategies to use between sessions.
Conditions Our Paediatric Physiotherapists Support
Children come to physiotherapy with many different diagnoses, and some may not have a diagnosis. What matters is how movement or physical function affects everyday life and participation.
| Condition / presentation | How physiotherapy may help |
|---|---|
| Developmental delay | Supports gross motor milestones and movement skills. |
| Cerebral palsy | May support movement, positioning, mobility and equipment needs. |
| Down syndrome | May support strength, joint stability, balance and walking. |
| Hypotonia (low muscle tone) | May support postural control, strength and endurance. |
| Muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular conditions | May support mobility, function, equipment needs and fatigue management. |
| Developmental coordination disorder | May support coordination, balance and movement control. |
| Torticollis and plagiocephaly | May include positioning, movement and handling strategies for babies. |
| Toe walking | Assessment can help identify contributing factors and guide appropriate strategies. |
| Hypermobility | May support strength, stability and pacing. |
| Autism | Physiotherapy may help where motor coordination, balance, strength or physical participation are affected. |
We can support all conditions. If your child’s needs are not listed, contact our team and we will identify the paediatric physiotherapy support that may be appropriate.
Can the NDIS Fund Physiotherapy for Children?
The NDIS may fund physiotherapy when it relates to a participant’s disability, goals and approved supports. Therapy funding can sit within Capacity Building Supports, including Improved Daily Living, but the funding available depends on the child’s individual plan and supports approved by the National Disability Insurance Agency.
Bloom Healthcare works with self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed participants. If you are unsure how physiotherapy fits within your child’s plan, our team can help you understand the relevant supports before services commence.
For younger children, the NDIS Early Childhood Approach may also be relevant depending on age, developmental needs and eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the NDIS cover Physiotherapy for children?
The NDIS may fund physiotherapy when it is related to your child’s disability, goals and approved supports. The NDIA determines what each plan includes, so funding varies between participants.
Which part of my child’s NDIS plan may pay for Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy can be funded through Capacity Building Supports, including Improved Daily Living. The exact funding depends on how your child’s plan has been structured.
Do I need a referral to access NDIS Paediatric Physiotherapy?
A medical referral is generally not required for NDIS-funded physiotherapy. Parents, carers, Support Coordinators and other professionals can refer directly to Bloom Healthcare.
What is the difference between Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy for children?
Physiotherapy generally focuses on movement, gross motor skills, strength, balance, posture and mobility. Occupational Therapy focuses more broadly on everyday activities such as self-care, play, school tasks, fine motor skills and sensory needs. Some children benefit from both.
At what age can a child start Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy can support children from infancy through adolescence. The right time to begin depends on developmental needs, physical abilities and goals rather than a particular age.
Can sessions happen at home or at school?
Yes. Depending on location, the service required and what is clinically appropriate, Bloom Healthcare can provide physiotherapy at home, school, early learning settings and in the community.
How long are sessions and how often will my child need therapy?
There is no single schedule that suits every child. Session length and frequency depend on your child’s needs, goals, available funding and the Physiotherapist’s clinical recommendations.
How do we start with Bloom Healthcare?
Call 1300 771 465 or complete our referral form. Our team will discuss your child’s needs, confirm service availability in your area and help organise the next step.
Paediatric Physiotherapy Built Around Your Child
Our approach is family-centred, practical and focused on everyday participation.
We plan therapy with families because you know your child best. Where appropriate, therapy happens in natural environments such as home, school and the community, so skills can be practised where they are actually used.
Our approach is neuroaffirming and respects each child’s individual way of communicating, moving, playing and participating. We also aim to provide culturally responsive care that takes account of family circumstances, routines and preferences.
Capacity building is central to the way we work. This may include coaching parents and carers, building confidence with strategies between sessions and helping physical skills become part of everyday routines.
Goals are reviewed as your child grows and needs change. Where a child sees more than one Bloom clinician, our multidisciplinary team can collaborate so strategies and goals work together.
